Interpreting is a form of communicative behavior, affected by various factors. Although simultaneous interpreting gains increasing popularity in most international arena, consecutive interpreting has also played a vital role in many international activities like government press conference due to its flexibility, accuracy and high professionalism. Fluency can exert great impact on the quality of interpreting. Professional interpreters also regard fluency as the forth requirement in evaluating the interpreting quality, following fidelity, completeness and logic consistency. However, compared with the research on interpreting fidelity and strategies, fluency is far less discussed.This thesis aims to carry out research on the disfluency in the training of C-E consecutive interpreting. In this thesis, based on the data collected, disfluency is defined as discontinuous oral delivery. The author have collected and classified the audio files, from which five samples were chosen to make a research on. Through this research, it is hoped, with the guidance of Daniel Gile’s Effort Models, to discuss the factors that cause the disfluencies in consecutive interpreting, analyze the reasons according to relevant theories and find out solutions to improve the interpreting quality of the students.The result shows:1) During the training of consecutive interpreting, the occurrence of disfluencies like unfilled pause and filled pause are very common. The filled pause includes meaningless words like “um” and “er”,repetition and self-repair. Due to the difference of personal ability, the frequency of disfluencies is different.2) Through analysis of data, we find that in terms of the types of disfluency, self-repair and meaningless words are the main actors, next is the self-repair. As for the production location of disfluencies, it is more likely to produce disfluent delivery when it comes to figures, idioms and phrases.3) With the guidance of the Effort Models and through the analysis of data, it is concluded that the main causes of disfluencies in consecutive interpreting are insufficient linguistic ability, improper note-taking, unskilled interpreting coping strategies and habitual words. Among these causes, theinsufficient linguistic ability occupies the largest percentage, next is the nonstandard note-taking.It is the hope of this thesis that the research results can provide certain guidance for the future study in consecutive interpreting, therefore the fluency and quality of consecutive interpreting delivery can be improved through relevant solutions.The author realize that there are still much to be improved in this thesis. For example, since these audio files are made with special intention, the immediate reaction of the interpreters cannot be well reflected. The author will continue to improve this research.
