| The original material Off-Camera Lighting for this task is a lecture conducted by the famous American Canon photographer Syl Arena in 2016.The interpreter composed a report after conducting the simulated consecutive interpretation.Off-Camera Lighting belongs to the discourse of science and technology.Two distinctive features are found about this lecture:(1)although PPT is used to remind the speaker of his speech,a sudden change of the topic and less relevant information adding are still encountered;(2)given in a casual manner,the lecture is also rendered at different speech rate.The above mentioned characteristics directly cause disfluency pauses taking place in the interpretation process.To be more specific,there are three direct causes,namely,conceptualization failure,formulation failure and self-monitoring failure.To cope with the aforementioned problems,the author proposes three tactics from the perspective of Gile's Effort Models,which interpreter is expected to rationally allocating energy in two phases of consecutive interpretation respectively(listening and comprehension phase,production phases).The three tactics proposed are as follows:Firstly,weakening;pressure for listening and memorizing can be alleviated at the conceptualization stage by omitting simple repetition,the sentences or phrases expressing the same meaning or,same information occurring more than once in the sentence.Secondly,reformulation;the interpreter can improve the energy allocation at the formulation stage by reformulating the information according to time,cause and effect or combination of the same meaning.Thirdly,conversion;by converting from active voice to passive voice,from general to specific or shifting between different parts of speech of the same word,the coordination pressure can be eased on interpreter's part so as to optimize self-monitoring.After the practice,the interpreter contributes some insights and practical suggestions in a hope of helping fellow interpreters. |
