Luciano Berio is an Italy composer who have great influences in the world.Passaggio(1962-1963)is Berio's first musical theatre.It also represents a milestone as he has devoted the greatest efforts to this work in terms of applying the new vocal technique in the field of chorus.In Passaggio,Berio highlights the musical theatricality,pursues a contrast at its most extreme in the creative technique to reflect musical drama' tension,and enhances the expressiveness and impressiveness of Passaggio,so that the drama can be heard,and the music can be seen.In addition,he also tries to establish a connection with the audience,hoping that they would be greatly engaged thus having deeper feelings.Under the background of stage props and lights,the fresh and novel musical drama has become a new carrier of comprehensive arts such as music,drama,literature,actions and stage.This paper consists of an introduction,four chapters and a conclusion: the introduction includes the rationale of topic selection and the current situation of relevant researches at home and abroad;the first chapter presents Berio's experiences throughout his lifetime and the background of his composition of Passaggio;the second chapter discusses Berio's composition techniques from three aspects: pitch organization,music materials and music structure;the third chapter discusses the composing techniques of vocal,orchestration,and the combination of vocal and bands respectively;the fourth chapter summarizes Berio's perceptions and concepts in the composition of Passaggio and attempts to present the spiritual world constructed in the musical language of the composer.
