This paper mainly studied the regeneration of classics in Chinese contemporary avant-garde drama.By investigating the phenomenon that a large number of classical texts adaptation existed in the creation of Chinese contemporary avant-garde drama,drawing on theories of "regeneration of classics","transference of the original story"and adaptation in the literary field,the representative figures of avant-garde drama o and their creations were included in the research objects,and the creative characteristics,aesthetic style and artistic value of the "regeneration of classics" of avant-garde drama in different stages and contexts were emphatically studied.Centering on "de-literalization" and "retheatricalization",this paper divides the"regeneration of classics" of avant-garde drama into three stages.The first stage is"rational exploration",which refers to Gao Xingjian and Lin Zhaohua reconstructing classical texts from the perspective of modernity and consciously exploring new theatre possibilities in "regeneration of classics" since the late 1980s.The second stage is "deconstruction of games",which refers to Meng Jinghui's and Zhang Guangtian's regeneration of classics showed the tendency of playfulness and carnival since the mid-1990s;The third stage is "serious return",referring to the "regeneration of classical”of Tian Qingxin,Wang Chong and others at the beginning of the new century,which gradually goes out of parody style and game attitude,and returns from pursuing the pleasure of subverting classics to empathizing the sense of life contained in classics.There is no lack of successful works of "regeneration of classical" in avant-garde drama.Some reflect on the aesthetic criteria and ideology represented by classics themselves in confrontation classics;some explore the new theater possibility of the classical text in the dialogue with classics;but there are also works that only produce gimmicks and do not produce high-quality products under the influence of the trend of secularization and marketization.The successful experience of regeneration and the lessons of regeneration inactivation provide important enlightenment for such creation:facing the classics,"excessive inferiority" and "self-conceit" are not desirable.On the one hand,the excessive emphasis on the authority of the classics is easy to be tied up in the admiration of the classics,and it is difficult to overcome the "anxiety of influence",and can not effectively confront and dialogue with classics.On the other hand,subverting and transforming classics without a deep understanding of the classics,it will easily lead to the aphasia of value construction and aesthetic construction.The "regeneration of classics" is to pursue the pleasure of subverting classics,or to empathize with the sense of life contained in classics;Whether it is the pursuit of creating gimmicks in the consumer market or the creation of new classics in theater practice is the self-question that the adapters,especially the so-called pioneers,must first face.
