With the advent of "cultural turn",memory research in the field of cultural studies has gained increasing momentum and has been introduced to literary studies.Nevertheless, memory theory is rarely used in the current study on Hesse.Within the framework of memory cultures, this research, informed by the theory of collective memory(broadly speaking, collective memory refers to individual memory influenced by socio-cultural factors and the memory stemming from interaction and media of a socio-cultural formation),attempts to dig into the transformation of the memory figures, analyze representative works of Hesse, and show the change of his thoughts. From the end of World War I to the Nazi seizure of power,Hesse experienced a heyday of creation, and it was at this time that his thoughts matured. As one of the masterpieces of that period,The Journey to Nuremberg is far superior to other fictitious literary works because of its authenticity in travel memories exploring the author's thoughts. The memorial sites such as Blaubeuren and Nuremberg and the works of Eduard Morike and Holderlin, which Hesse repeatedly mentioned in the Journey to Nuremberg, play a memorial role and bridge Hesse's pursuit of following traditional German Romanticism and the beautiful past.Hesse hopes that the humor he finds(especially "gallows humor")can become a recipe for constructing an illusory poetic world, resisting the misfortune and dirty reality of life and society, and redeeming people out of a chaotic society. As Hesse's last great novel,The Glass Bead Game marks the final maturity of his thoughts. As a basis for the existence of the entire educational province of Castile,an important theme, and the thread of this book, the Glass Bead Game carries a strong cultural connotation, serves as the figurehead, and amounts to a form of cultural staging. That is why culture unfolds in the game.To capture the cultural essence of the Glass Bead Game, the present study turns to the findings and theories of Johan Huizinga.Meanwhile, the theory of Aleida and Jan Assmann helps confirm the glass bead as a cultural memory. In addition,it is made clear that the glass bead target reconstructs memory and functional memory.Thereafter, the idea, historical development, characteristics and the embodiment are explained succinctly. This will create the prerequisite for using the text to examine the staging and embodiment of ancient Chinese culture of harmony. Finally,it is decidedly established that the glass bead game wears the ancient Chinese culture of harmony.Harmony is for Hesse the best recipe for saving the individual from the contradiction and saving society and the world from ruin.In the end, analysis of the causes of the metamorphoses of the memorial figures in the two works illustrates the changes in Hesse's thoughts and the proposed and suggested solutions that cause external and internal causes. In addition, his agreement to harmony and his insistence on harmony manifests itself.
