Theory On Cosmic Thought Of The Glass Bead Game

“Game” is the key word in Hermann Hesse’s The Glass Bead Game.He endows the “game” with a special significance by the symbolic means,which contains the Cosmic Thought of Hesse.The present thesis tries to take “game” as the starting point in a peeping way,and find the meaning of “game” symbolizes the continuous reconciliation of two opposing forces through detailed text analysis.The opposite force is different from the “separate concepts” in western relational dualism such as subject-object,god-world,reality-phenomenon,existence-nonexistence,good-evil,body-mind.Hesse faced with the split of human nature caused by the split of these “separative concepts”,and connected this split of human nature with the decline of culture,so he took all spiritual phenomena in the universe as the object of his investigation,and tried hard to reconcile the world of phenomena and the world of ideas.In this process,Hesse endowed “game” with the characteristics of creativity,aesthetics and sense of order,in which he completed the resistance to individualism.“Game” represents Hesse’s way of solving individual problems and exploring the way out of the decline of western civilization.Hesse completed the redemption of the decline of culture and the fall of human nature in the “game”.Such questions have been the focus of discussion in the humanities since the 18 th century,so the novel is the answer of Hesse towards this issue.When the symbolic meaning of “game” is solved,the key problems in the novel are solved.“Game” enabled us to see the the connotation of Hesse’s Cosmic Thought,and the connotation and the form of the novel cannot be separated,such as the ring structure and “circular image” in the novel.So the analysis of the theme and form will be taken into account in this article.This thesis will be divided into five parts.The first part is the introduction.After making a brief statement of the problems,the present thesis will describe the home and abroad research status,perspective and methods of the topic.The first chapter mainly examines the cultural background of the “game” from the perspective of history and reveals the motivation of Hesse’s literary creation.This part mainly explores the cultural context of The Glass Bead Game and traces the course of “game” to find the symbolic meaning of “game”.The first section puts the cultural context of The Glass Bead Game into the “Supplement Era”.The second mainly analyzes the resources of “game”,especially in the history of western aesthetics.The second chapter takes Knecht’s divine experience to the cosmos as the main line and then makes a detailed analysis of the symbolic meaning of the key words “music”,“meditation”,“awakening”,“responsibility”,“service” and their logical relations in the text.By putting them in the form of thinking of the net,we can see the “game” in the position of the Cosmic Thought and the whole context of it.In the third chapter,the form of the text explains the novel’s circular creation.Firstly,the circular character image and environment in the text will be analyzed in detail.Secondly,it explains the circular structure of the text,including the metaphor of “five” and “net”,and the analysis of the circular images such as “moon”,“stars” and brightness.Finally,it explains the cycle of seasons in the text.In the last part,the author reveals the creation motivation of The Glass Bead Game and analyzes the artistic characteristics of the novel.The first section mainly the conclusion that “game” symbolizes the continuous formation of two opposing forces.The second section explains the relationship between the Cosmic and the heart.The third section reveals the value meaning of the Cosmic Thought that man is in the cosmos.
