The E-nglish Curriculum Standard for General Senior High Schools(2017 edition)was officially published in 2018,which regards the development of students' core competence as the specific goal of English curriculum."The core competence of English subject consists of four elements:language ability,cultural awareness,thinking quality and learning ability." Among them,thinking quality is the focus of mental representation,and is also the necessary ability of students.Thinking quality reflects the characteristics and levels of students'mental development and cultivating students' thinking quality is helpful to improve students' ability to analyze and solve problems.The author's school is a hundred-year-old school with a keen interest in experimentation.Influenced by the educational and cultural atmosphere of the school,the English department in which I work has never confined the educational vision to the ''college entrance examination''.but has always emphasized the instrumentality and humanity of the language,and attaches great importance to the development of students' thinking quality and cultural awareness.More importantly,under the guidance of this goal,the author and colleagues have made a lot of attempts and reforms.Based on the comprehensive English curriculum,the author takes the school as a case study unit,adopting the methods of case study and questionnaire survey in this research,which covers the teaching plan and practice of compulsory English class,the teaching plan and practice of optional English class,and the operation and development of activity curriculum.The author sums up the current situation of thinking quality implementation,analyze the existing problems,and try to explore the optimization countermeasures.Through the study,we find that the logical thinking ability of the sample of students is higher than the other two dimensions,namely critical thinking ability and innovative thinking ability.But overall,the results of each dimension exceeded the average level.The students are satisfied with the teaching idea,mode and content of the English subject in our school.especially in the cultivation of thinking ability and the help for long-term learning.However,the survey also finds a number of issues worthy of attention.Firstly,in compulsory English class students feel that "the most useful part" is not very beneficial to cultivate thinking quality.Secondly,the author and colleagues are proud of the evaluation system created by themselves,but most students investigated in the author's class think that the system has little influence on their improvement both in thinking quality and English learning.Thirdly,it is a fact that only a few people can take English optional courses or take part in English club activities in high school.which are helpful to the cultivation of thinking quality.Therefore,the author analyses the reasons and puts forward some optimization countermeasures.From the teacher level,we should adhere to the concept of three-year overall planning and multilateral teaching content.In terms of teaching evaluation,we should design diversified processing evaluation methods.As far as curriculum is concerned,we should develop colourful and personalized optional courses.From the school level,it is necessary to arrange the curriculum by the school as a whole.The school are supposed to solve the problems of competition time-consuming and few optional courses,and help to retrain teachers and make full use of the resources inside and outside the school.
