The Relevance Between Translating And Post-editing Abilities

Post-editing of machine translation is a specialized profession.With the rapid increase of translation market demand,the shortening of translation delivery time,the continuous improvement of translation technology,post-editing of machine translation will play an increasingly larger role in the language service industry.Different from the traditional translation method,post-editing has been used to meet the demand for rapid translation in this information age.An objective of its development is to save as much time and effort as possible.Therefore,combining machine translation and manual post-editing will be the future development trend.Researchers have started to investigate post-editing since the 1980 s,and made solid progress in the recent two decades,and the wide use of post-editing in the language industry seems to attest to its effectiveness.This thesis attempts to analyze the relationship between translator's ability and post-editing ability by analyzing the post-editing efficiency and post-editing quality of different levels of translators through screen capturing experiments.This thesis is composed of two parts.The first part makes an introduction of the entire thesis and summarizes existing research.The second part is the experiment part which describes the experiment design,procedures,results and conclusions.Two experiments were conducted with a total of 8 subjects,which include 6 graduate students and 2 senior translators who all major in translation.Each experiment needs 30 minutes.Combining the texts selection before the experiment,the editing behavior record during the experiment,and the data analysis and expert scoring after the experiment,this thesis draws the relationship between the translator's ability and the post-editing ability from the analysis of the post-editing efficiency and quality.Through the comparison of experimental data,it was found that senior translators had obvious advantages in post-editing,and their post-editing efficiency and quality were much higher than translation beginners.When the translation beginners edited the machine translation,the post-editing behavior between them was quite different.The post-editing efficiency of translation beginners varied greatly,and the quality of post-editing texts was also uneven.Through the observation and study of the content of the screen,we found that the difference between the post-editing strategies of the translator beginners and the senior translators was a very important reason for thedifference in efficiency.At the same time,this thesis also analyzed the reasons for the low quality of translated texts for beginners.It was hoped that through the analysis of experimental data,the relationship between translator's ability and post-editing ability could be found,so as to find a more efficient and higher quality method for post-editing.
