As a key factor influencing English learning,motivation is an important topic that scholars at home and abroad focus on and study.In recent years,there are many empirical studies on college students' learning motivation,but less involved the students' background.From the perspective of different educational background,this paper divides the educational background of non-English major college students into three categories:pure urban background,urban floating background and pure rural background,and studies the characteristics of learning motivation,gender differences and grade differences of college students with three educational backgrounds.The purpose of this study is to explore the characteristics and differences of learning motivation among non-English majors with different educational backgrounds.This paper adopts Gao Yihong's learning motivation questionnaire and her classification method of English learning motivation.Through the analysis of the questionnaire to investigate the learning motivation of 506 non-English major students in Fujian Normal University,this study finds that:1.English learning motivation of non-English majors is the strongest in individual development motivation and immediate achievement motivation,pure urban background learning situation motivation is the weakest,urban floating and pure rural background is the weakest in the motivation going abroad.2.There are significant differences in English learning motivation among college students from different backgrounds.3.There are gender differences in English learning motivation among college students from different backgrounds.4.There are grade differences in English learning motivation among college students from different backgrounds.The study shows that college students tend to have low interest in English learning and there exists significant difference in learning motivation between students from urban and rural areas.Thus,it is necessary to pay attention to the differences of college students'English learning motivation under the dualistic structure system of urban and rural areas in China.This study enriches the empirical research on college students'learning motivation,and provides theoretical basis for higher education workers so that university teachers can better teach students in accordance with their aptitude and their different educational backgrounds,which will help to improve students' English level.
