English leaning is a tough task that Chinese students have to face. Although much attention has been paid on it, the outcome is far from what we have expected. Taking all the reasons into account, learning motivation is a crucial factor in English learning. It is related to the initiative and the effectiveness of the students to learn English, even to understand English world culture, and to appreciate the charm of the language and culture. Under the Chinese education system, independent colleges have their own their distinctive features. Students from independent college are lagging disgusted with negative symptoms in English learning, and all for the lack of learning motivation.To understand the real condition of independent college students’English learning motivation, the article selected Yangtze University College of Technology and Engineering as the research subject. It is based on the "integrative motivation" (intrinsic motivation) and "instrumental motivation" (extrinsic motivation) theory, and takes the internal interest motivation as intrinsic motivation factors, the scores, situation, go abroad, social responsibility, personal development, information media as extrinsic motivation factors, and collect data of independent college students" English learning motivation through the questionnaire survey. Then, through descriptive statistics and variance analysis, this paper analyzes the situation and characteristic of the Yangtze University College of Technology and Engineering students" English learning; estimates the independent college students’motivation of learning English, integrative motivation, or instrumental motivation:finds out if there is a significant difference in gender, family background on independent college students’motivation of learning English.The research has found that the independent college students’motivation of learning English is mainly instrumental motivation, rather than integrative motivation. In the instrumental motivation, achievement motivation and personal development motivation are relatively strong. In terms of gender differences, there is no difference in integrative motivation, while there are differences in instrumental motivation. In instrumental motivation, personal development motivation, and achievement motivation have gender differences, where boys" personal development motivation is stronger than girls", while girls" learning motivation is stronger than boys". There are no differences in information media motivation, abroad motivation, learning situations motivation, and social responsibility motivation. In terms of differences between urban and rural areas, significant differences exist between urban students and rural students in English learning motivation. Integrative motivation of urban students is higher than rural students. In instrumental motivation, there is no difference between urban and rural students in information media motivation, learning situation motivation, achievement motivation, and social responsibility motivation. In terms of personal development motivation, rural students are stronger than urban students; In terms of abroad motivation, although independent college students’abroad motivation is not strong, the urban students’abroad motivation is stronger than rural students’. Therefore, in the aspect of teaching, the independent college should focus on the motivation of students in learning English type, gender differences and differences between urban and rural origins.According to thesis, the independent college will help students adjust learning strategies and the teaching methods, finally promote the benign development of the language learning.
