In 1974,Schachter first proposed the research topic,"avoidance",since then it has attracted extensive and enthusiastic attention from domestic and foreign researchers.But essentially,avoidance is a kind of linguistic psychological phenomenon,which refers to a kind of non-expressive behavior that learners don't use the grammatical phenomenon and language structure of the target language that are more complex,and they are not familiar with or not sure about,even they are reluctant to speak for various reasons in the study of foreign language learning.(Liao Chuanfeng,Xu Weicheng,2002)Appropriate use of avoidance strategies will help second language learners to communicate smoothly and achieve communicative goals.However,if overused for a long time,it will have a negative impact on language learning and hinder the improvement of language learning.So,in this research,101 students in two classes from grade one in Experimental Middle School Attached to Huaibei Normal University's senior high department are selected as the research subjects.Though the investigation and study of the first grade learners' avoidance in English classroom,the purpose of this study is to answer the following three questions:(1)What is the overall performance of senior one students' avoidance in English classroom ?(2)What are the avoidance behaviors of senior one students in English classroom?(3)What are the main causes of avoidance in English classroom for senior one students?By means of questionnaire,classroom observation and post—course interview,and with the aid of statistical tools such as Excel and SPSS 23.0,there are some conclusions from the study as follows:(1)the avoidance phenomenon by the high school students in grade one exists in English classroom generally,in other word's,the students will tend to use the they tend to use simple and more familiar language knowledge while avoiding using some difficult or newly learned language knowledge,and it is more obviously embodied in pronunciation,vocabulary,syntax.Moreover,boys and introverted students are more likely to engage in avoidance behavior.(2)thefrequency of avoidance behavior adopted by students in grade one is from high to low in the order of detour,substitution,interruption and creation,instead of change,in pronunciation,vocabulary,syntax and topic.(3)the main causes of avoidance phenomenon by senior high school students include: insufficient language knowledge,mother tongue interference,and psychological factors,like fear of making mistakes,tension in English class.Therefore,in view of the above research results,the author puts forward three suggestions as follows: in the course of English teaching,it is necessary to strengthen the effective input of target language and strengthen training to improve the language proficiency constantly.Moreover,we should pay attention to differences between Chinese and English linguistically and cultural knowledge penetration to overcome the mother tongue interference.In addition,teachers should also treat avoidance phenomenon correctly and conduct positive psychological counseling for students.
