The research of ancient and modern overlapping townsites is a trend of archaeological research in recent years.Doing a good job of archaeological research in ancient towns is helpful to urban pianning and the protection of historical culture.Anyang,as one of the eight ancient capitals of China,is a typical ancient and modern overlapping townsite with rich cultural relics. It is necessary to carry out archaeological research on it for protect.Based on the information of Sui and Tang relics which unearthed scientifically and published in Anyang area, and combined with relevant research results, this paper makes a preliminary discussion on layout and culture of Xiangzhou City.Firstly,it researchs on Xiangzhou city about the layout, gates, streets, and other architectures.During the Sui and Tang dynasties,Xiangzhou City was composed of inner and outer cities. It was nearly Square and one door on each side. There was a Wengcheng outside the door, and there was a city moat outside the city wall. The street was cross street, and the main office was located in the southeast of the city. The temples were mainly distributed around the city. The tombs and kiln sites were mainly distributed the west and north outside the city. The location of the city site and the distribution of tombs are mainly affected by the landform.Secondly, there have a typology analysis about tombs and typical funerary objects in Sui and Tang.Through the typology analysis of the tomb shape and typical funerary objects in the Sui and Tang dynasties of Xiangzhou City, the tombs of the Sui and Tang dynasties were divided into the Sui to Renshou years, the Renshou years to the end of the Sui Dynasty, the early Tang Dynasty to Tianbao years, and the Tianbao period to the end of the Tang Dynasty.Cultural factor analysis was used to explore the origin and development of Sui and Tang tombs in Xiangzhou City. The material and cultural features of Xiangzhou City during the Sui and Tang dynasties not only inherited the Eastern Wei and Northern Qi,but also communicated with the surrounding areas. Finally,it makes a comment on the ?Xiaotun·Discovery and Excavation of Site·Tombs of Sui and Tang Dynasties?,and analyses the viewpoints. Some of the ideas in the book are still applicable today. Some views have proved to be inapplicable with new archaeological material. In addition,it also compares the tomb of Sui and Tang in angyang area with the tomb of Sui and Tang around Bohai area from three aspects: the shape and construction of tombs, the funerary objects and the inner wall brick, and discusses the reasons for the appearance of circular tombs and polygonal tombs in around Bohai area.It is dominated by brick tombs around Bohai area, and the tombs of Tudong and Tukeng began to increase gradually in southern Hebei in the middle and late Tang Dynasty. The circular tomb is common around Bohai region, which should be related to its geographical environment. The tombs began to be popular for homely decoration, mainly in northern Hebei and Anyang areas,in the late Tang Dynasty. And the Chaoyang area and the south of Hebei area were basically absent. In northern Hebei province, there are two forms of tombs with homely decoration. The first only have brick sculpture, the second brick sculpture combines with mural. But in Anyang area, there is only a combination of brick sculpture and mural in tomb. There are commonalities and differences in the contents of the murals. The themes of flower-and-bird paintings and homely life paintings are popular in both regions. However, the themes such as the old man under the tree, the zodiac and the visualize of tomb owner are not found in Anyang area. With regard to funerary objects, there are no major differences between the four regions, mainly the three categories of figurines and living utensils. In the early and middle Tang Dynasty, the a set of figurines were popular, and then gradually disappeared. In the middle and late Tang Dynasty, pottery, porcelain and lacquerware were popular.
