This translation practice project focuses on the C-E translation of China's Backbone:65 Years of China's Indusrialization(an Excerpt)(hereinafter referred to as China's Backbone)written by Jin Bei,a famous economist in China.During the translation,the author finds that the English translation of metaphors in the original text is inappropriate and that it is difficult to balance between "faithfulness" and "expressiveness".Therefore,the author has to review previous studies on metaphors and summarize the strategies of metaphor translation applicable for this publicity material for foreigners.Based on the author's review and summary,the author tries to discuss what are factored in the translation of metaphors and engage in a case-by-case study of the metaphor translation in this paper.As the translation material selected in this translation practice project involves historical and political culture and current realities in China,it is necessary to employ certain translation strategies to deal with the metaphors in the original text.Considering the the publicity purpose of the text itself,the author assumes that the characters of the publicity text may factor in how the metaphors in the text are translated.This paper reviews the translation strategies of metaphor proposed by Newmark and Toury,and analyses the influence of metaphor types,text types and cultural factors on the specific translation strategies that can be adopted in different situations.In view of the above problems,the author summarizes the metaphor translation strategies applicable to publicity materials for foreigners on the basis of the research results of relevant previous studies and employs these strategies in specific examples in this paper.The author finds that under the influence of metaphor types,text types and cultural factors,the translation strategies of metaphors in this paper include:retaining the metaphor,replacing the metaphor,explaining the sense of the metaphor after deleting the metaphor,and deleting the metaphor only.Based on the context and historical and political culture and current realities in China,this paper makes a detailed analysis of the four strategies,in order to achieve accuracy in translation without impairing the connotation and expression effect of the original text,and to conform to the reading expectations and habits of native English readers.
