On the basis of the first chapter of The Principles of Economics, a classic monogragh on economics by American economist Nicholas Gregory Mankiw, the essay introduces a theory of ideational metaphor from Systemic Functional Linguistics into translation study on its original corpus and Chinese translation through a scientific method of marking, statistics and analysis. The indeational metaphors in English academic text are divided into14types which provide a frame for the translation of the corresponding Chinese ideational metaphors. Six translation strategies, including corresponding, deriving, restoring, paraphrasing, omitting, adding, have been summarized finally to improve the Chinese translation in its fidelity, logic and preciseness. This result will be more or less valuable in the study and practice of classic monograph’s EC translation and benificial to offer some reference in ideational metaphor translation appreciation for many translators and students.
