Since modern times,with the development of port and city modernization after the Opium War,Shanghai,on the basis of traditional Wu-Yue culture,has absorbed a wide variety of cultures from all over the world and formed a unique Shanghai-style culture.As the most representative small newspaper in Shanghai,The Crystal is the most representative newspaper in Shanghai.The focus is on the peopleundefineds livelihood of the city and the various forms of society,which are loved by the masses in Shanghai.The Crystal was born in the environment of the Shanghai culture and paid attention to the dissemination and shaping of the Shanghai culture in the course of its development.It not only caters to the publicundefineds cultural taste,but also plays an important role in the inheritance and development of Shanghai culture.Using the knowledge of communication,semiotics and culturology,this paper takes The Crystal in the 1920 s and 1930 s as an example to study its spreading and shaping to the culture of Shanghai.The article first combs the origin and development of Shanghai culture,then makes a simple analysis of the formation and development of Shanghai tabloid and Shanghai culture,and on the basis of this,probes into the interactive relationship between The Crystal and Shanghai culture.Looking for the symbiosis and historical coupling between newspaper media and urban culture,this paper analyzes the symbolic transmission of Shanghai culture in The Crystal from the beginning of the 20 th century to the 1930 s,and sums up the spreading and shaping role played by the newspaper in the development of Shanghai culture.The paper also summarizes the inheritance of The Crystal to the culture of Shanghai.
