No?l Carroll is one of the famous contemporary American analytic aestheticians and art theorists.Analytical aesthetics and pragmatism are the important backgrounds of Carroll's thought.He also absorbs the theoretical resources of many disciplines.The methodology of pluralism makes Carroll put forward many original solutions to artistic problems.This paper takes No?l Carroll's theory of art criticism as the main research object,trying to systematically sort out and discuss the critical philosophy he constructed,objectively evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of his theory,and excavate the value and significance of his critical theory.The full text includes three parts: introduction,body and conclusion.Firstly,the introduction briefly describes No?l Carroll' academic history and summarizes the research status of Carroll's theory at home and abroad,in order to grasp the value and significance of this topic.The body includes four chapters.The first chapter mainly analyses and summarizes the historical origin and philosophical foundation of Carroll's philosophy of art criticism.Western Grand Theory has a negative impact on art criticism because it occupies the critical field.Carroll's reconstruction of critical philosophy is to overcome the harm of Grand Theory to a large extent.Carroll not only critically inherited the tradition of “Meta-Criticism”of analytical aesthetics,but also absorbed the theoretical resources of pragmatism and enriched the form of his critical philosophy.The second Chapter mainly summarizes and combs Carroll's understanding of the essence of art criticism.Carroll believes that art criticism essentially involves evaluation.Besides evaluation,the basic activities of criticism involves description,elucidation,categorization,contextualization,interpretation and analysis,which provide basis and reasons for evaluation.The Chapter three focuses on Carroll's construction of the object and direction of art criticism.Carroll regards the object of art criticism as the “success value”of art,and emphasizes that the main task of criticism is to discover what is valuable or worthy of attention in artworks.In the process of diccovering the value of the artworks,Carroll believes that the most important thing is to refer to the artist's intention.Carroll 's values are pragmatic.Specifically,he advocates paying attention to the “three-domensions”of art,that is,the relationship between art and emotion,morality,politics and other aspects,and paying attention to the evaluation of the social value of art.The Chapter four,reflecting on the significance and limitations of Carroll's philosophy of art criticism.Carroll promotes the development of critical philosophy and are conducive to returning to the rational practice of criticism.However,Carroll's neglect of aesthetic value of art and the lack of cultural criticism show that he overcaters to avant-garde art and lacks due criticism.Concluding part,summarizes the strengths and weaknesses of Carroll's critical philosophy,emphasizes that its theoretical achievements should be used for reference and absorbed critically.Carroll regained the important position of “Meta-Criticism” in analytical aesthetics.Based on the accumulation of years of art criticism practice and the critical absorption of predecessors' theoretical ideas,he constructed a set of original evaluation system,whose unique value lies mainly in the unremitting pursuit of the objectivity of criticism.Generally speaking,this paper is devoted to summarizing and analyzing Carroll's critical thoughts,methods and strategies,but lack of the thought deepness.
