A Study Of Griffith's Translation Of Sun Tzu The Art Of War From The Perspective Of Cultural Translation Theory

This study chooses Griffith's English translation version of Sun Tzu The Art of War as the research object.Gounded in Bassnett's cultural translation theory,this study aims to explore vocabularies,sentences and cultural images of Griffith's translation work of Sun Tzu The Art of War by qualitative research and case study.This study summarizes two strategies used by Griffith in different categories of words and sentence patterns,which are the preservation of cultural image strategy and the substitution of culture image strategy.Then it explores the role of cultural image construction in translation process.This study mainly answers the following three questions:(1)What kinds of translation strategies does Griffith adopt in translation of Sun Tzu The Art of War?(2)How does Griffith apply the preservation of cultural image strategy and the substitution of cultural image strategy in translating words and sentences?(3)Whether is the cultural image construction of Sun Tzu The Art of War close to the original text and how does it influence the cultural image transfer?The study finds that:(1)Griffith adopted the strategies of preservation of cultural image and substitution of cultural image in translating this classic ancient book.(2)As for exact numbers,culture-loaded words and parallelism,the translator can adopt the preservation of cultural image strategy.If necessary,even "Chinglish" can be used to maintain the original intention of culture.The substitution of cultural image strategy can be used in translating typical ancient numbers,misreading vocabularies,less used vocabularies,and duality in sentence pattern.(3)Due to the differences in context and culture,in the process of cultural image construction,the foreign translator tends to be in favor of a more powerful language in a certain degree,which will have some negative effects on the original cultural image transfer for the text.Therefore,promoting the advantage of native translators and improving cultural output can consolidate China's cultural soft power and stimulate China's international influence.
