The spatial narrative theory of fiction, which emerged in the West in the 20 th century,is based on the theory and method of analyzing the narrative structure and narrative characteristics of fiction, which pays more attention to the social, historical and cultural significance of the works in the previous criticism of fiction, but neglects the reflection on the study of the narrative space, formal skills and structure of fiction.French writer Stendhal's Le Rouge et Le Noir opens the pioneer of western critical realism novel. Its unique writing art and profound ideological connotation make this work become a literary classic. The novel's strokes go deep into the heart of the characters and portray the complex and changeable psychology of the characters, which earns him the title of "Master of Psychological Analysis".At the same time, the novel pays attention to the construction of unique narrative space, unique narrative structure and unique narrative skills. However,in the interpretation and criticism of the novel tradition, people pay less attention to the spatial narrative characteristics of the novel. Therefore, this paper re-reads Le Rouge et Le Noir with spatial narrative theory. On the two effective bases of realistic creation principle and modernity artistic characteristics, this paper chooses Frank,Lefebvre and Gabriel Zoren's spatial narrative theory to systematically interpret Le Rouge et Le Noir that has embodied the era background of the social and physical space, psychological space manifesting personal character of complex changes and text space possessing the art modernity in order to explore the artistic value and aesthetic meaning of space for works. From the perspectives of the basic composition of space narrative art, social physical space, psychological space of characters and text space of fiction, this paper uses Lefebvre and Gabriel Zoren's space narrative theory to analyze the space composition and artistic function of fiction.Firstly, the basic composition and characteristics of space narrative art in Le Rouge et Le Noir are briefly analyzed.Secondly, the social-physical space and narrativevalue of Le Rouge et Le Noir are interpreted from the four typical social-physical spaces of Villier,Bezangsong Theological Seminary,Marquis House of Paris and prison;thirdly, the psychological space of Le Rouge et Le Noir is analyzed, focusing on the psychological space of the three protagonists,Julien,Mrs.de Rena and Miss Mathilde; Finally, the paper analyzes the artistic characteristics of modernity in the text space of Le Rouge et Le Noir from the perspectives of narrative language and narrative sequence. Therefore, this paper uses the space narrative theory to interpret Le Rouge et Le Noir systematically from the perspective of content and form, and has a clearer understanding of the construction and value of social physical space, psychological space and text space in the work.Through a systematic analysis of the elements, manifestations and structural features of the narrative space in Le Rouge et Le Noir, the artistic functions and effects of the narrative space in character shaping, plot development and theme revealing are further interpreted. It can be said that the unique narrative art of realism and modernity in Le Rouge et Le Noir shows Stendhal's unique creative wisdom different from that of contemporary creators. The space narrative art of the novel is another artistic feature of the unique charm of Le Rouge et Le Noir.
