Application Of Adaptation Theory In The Translation Of Feature Story

With the continuous development of economic globalization and cultural pluralism,people worldwide pay attention to both local and international news.Integrating the characteristics of artistry,entertainment,humanity together,Feature Story,as one genre of news,grasps a certain scene in certain space and time with a typical meaning,and makes a vivid report on an event or one character in news.I had a three-month translation practice at China Daily.All the news that I translated are Feature Stories.The adaptation theory is a linguistic theory proposed by the famous Belgian linguist and secretary of the International Institute of Pragmatics,Jef Verschueren.In his view,language use is also the process of function of language,and language users continue to choose the advisable language means according to the need of communicative context to achieve the communicative intention.It is inspiring that adaptation theory has profound theoretical guiding significance for the translation of Feature Story.A translator should attach his attention to the lexical,syntactical and discourse level under the adaptation theory to achieve the characteristics of Feature Story.This report falls into five chapters.The first chapter gives a brief introduction to the objective and framework of this report,the task description,and procedures of translation which includes preparations before translation,process of translation and revision after translation.The second chapter introduces literature reviews of the adaptation theory from home and broad and research about application theory to the translation of news.The third chapter introduces the definition and characteristics of Feature Story.The fourth chapter is the body part of the thesis,giving an analysis from the linguistic structure including lexical,syntactical and discourse level under the guidance of adaptation theory.By adopting flexible translation means such as amplification and division to deal with the text reasonably,the translation achieves the requirements of the adaptation theory,making the version fulfill the characteristics of Feature Story.The last chapter concludes with the author's findings and limitations of this report.Also the bibliography and appendix are included in the end of report.With the completion of the report,it is expected to accumulate some experience for future translation practice and provide some valuable references in the practice.
