This thesis is an English-Chinese translation report. The source text The Choice is the memoir of Edith Eva Eger,a Holocaust survivor and psychologist. The Choice was published on September 5,2017 with 304 pages, about 120 thousand words. The translator chooses Chapter 16 and Chapter 23 as the translation material.Chapter 16 mainly tells that the author helps three patients get out of their mind prison and live in the present time.Chapter 23 concludes what the author primarily writes about. The translator aims at not only enhancing her translation ability but also removing language barrier for target language readers who want to read The Choice,The translating process is divided into three phases:pre-translating.translating,and post-translating.Pre-translating phase refers to the preparation the translator makes before translating Chapter 16 and Chapter 23.Translating phase is the process the translator translated from English to Chinese.Post-translating phase means the translator checks her translation many times to ensure its quality. The translator elaborates each phase in this project report. The translator encounters many problems mainly at word level and sentence level in translation process. However, the translator solves the problems with the guidance of the theory about semantic and communicative translation proposed by Peter Newmark combined with translation techniques such as conversion, addition, and splitting. The translator presents the theory and its application and problem solving process in the chapter of Case AnalysisThe translator has learned much from this translating practice:1.The translator needs enough preparations before translating, for example having a good command of new words and the author's background, life experience, writing style, etc.to have a good understanding of the source text and the translation style;2.Translating cannot go without the guiding of the theory and semantic translation and communicative translation play an limportant role in guiding translating practice;3.The translation needs to be checked many times and checked by different persons to ensure its quality.
