On Translation Of The Verb "Gao(搞)" From The Perspective Of Semantic Translation And Communicative Translation

The Chinese word "Gao(搞)" is a polysemous verb in contemporary vocabulary. As the meaning is multiplied, the use is also considerably flexible. The verb "Gao(搞)" is a high frequency word in colloquial and written Chinese language. It has very strong composing function in the syntax and a profound meaning in semantics. It emerges as the same as other language phenomenon, the verb "Gao(搞)" also develops with its internal reasons and rules. Not all words in human community life can be expressed by other appropriate words. People always use the verb "Gao(搞)" to replace other words in our daily life. However, what surprised me is that not so many foreigners use the verb "Gao(搞)" as we expected. Due to this, this paper analyzes the translation of the verb "Gao(搞)" from several points with real examples.This thesis attempts to probe the translation of the verb "Gao(搞)" from the perspective of the semantic translation and communicative translation. British translation theorist Peter Newmark in his book "Approaches to Translation "present the two approaches. Meanwhile, Peter Newmark formed his own text typology and puts them into three types:i.e. the expressive type, the informative type and the evocative type. In order of different translation difficulties from different text types, Peter Newmark puts forward the approaches of Semantic translation and Communicative translation which contributes the most to the translation studies and also it is regarded as the most influential achievement in his translation studies.Th is thesis gives a research into the functional usage of the verb "Gao(搞)"and the techniques of the translating "Gao(搞)”from two aspects:one analyzes the composing function in the syntax and the related techniques of the translating " Gao(搞)”；the other analyzes the translation of the verb "Gao(搞)" in daily life.This paper studies its Chinese usage from a pragmatic view and compares the differences of the verb "Gao(搞)”of the two kinds of languages. The comparative study in these two different languages will keep the interest of translators and improve helpfulness to some extent in foreign language learning.Through the view of semantic translation and communicative translation, this article focuses on its syntax function, vocabulary, meaning, and translation approach. The meanings of the word“Gao(搞)’’are varied and complex. Meanings mainly depend on different conversation contexts. The authors try to provide principles and possible strategies for the translation of the word“Gao(搞)”.
