An impromptu speech refers to any speech to be given without thorough preparation.Such a speech is sometimes obscured by redundant information,mixed-up syntax, weak logical progression, vague pronoun reference, etc.,which pose challenges for simultaneous interpreters.Translation strategies that interpreters adopt will influence the readability of the target text. With an emphasis on meaning, the Interpretative Theory of Translation could guide interpreters to get rid of wording and structures of the original text and reformulate its underlying meaning,so as to facilitate communication.Based on the Interpretative Theory of Translation, this thesis explores what difficulties student interpreters may encounter when translating impromptu speeches from English to Chinese and what strategies could they adopt.Given that previous studies mostly focus on strategies for interpreting impromptu speeches from Chinese to English, this thesis centering on E-C interpreting is meaningful.Through data analysis, this thesis finds that reformulation, logic restructuring, cognitive complement and explanation could increase the accuracy and readability of the target text.Specifically, reformulation is helpful in coping with redundancy,mixed-up syntax.,false start and shift of semantic emphasis;logic restructuring could apply to sentences with weak logic progression;cognitive complement could assist interpreters to correct misused words;and explanation is useful for vague pronoun reference. This thesis also finds that most student interpreters have proactively used reformulation and logic restructuring, yet in general they should raise awareness of misused words and vague pronoun reference and cope with them by cognitive complement and explanation.
