Practice Report On C-E Consecutive Interpreting Of Zhang Yanguang's Impromptu Speech From Perspective Of Interpretive Theory Of Translation

Impromptu speech is commonly seen in consecutive interpreting.It is usually featured with incomplete constituents,redundancy,implicit logic and loose structure,which poses challenges to interpreters,the beginners and MTI students in particular.Most class material used for interpretation practice are standard speeches,therefore,it is worthwhile to delve into the interpretation tactics for impromptu speech and provide references to MTI students and beginners.This paper attempts to adopt Interpretive Theory of Translation(Theory of Sense or ITT)to handle these problems in C-E consecutive interpreting of impromptu speech as the theory is feasible to deverbalize source language and express the sense to the target audience as suggested by Zhang Jiliang(2009).The paper is actually a practice report on C-E interpretation of an impromptu speech given by Mr.Zhang Yanguang,Secretary of the Board of Fenjiu Group during 2019 Seminar of Basic Experiences and Cases on China's Development Research and Investigation in Fenyang.Through the case study,this report first presents the specific problems posed by the speaker while giving Chinese impromptu speech such as overused and misused pronouns,pet phrase,repetition,incomplete sense and mixed sentence structures and then presents coping techniques one by one in hope that the suggested tactics will be helpful for beginners or MTI students while interpreting Chinese impromptu speech.
