A Study On The Gift Writing Of Ursula Le Guin’s The Annals Of The Western Shore

"The Annals of the Western Shore" is the last series of fantasy novels by contemporary American writer Ursula Le Guin.As a work with the theme of growth,"The Annals of the Western Shore" takes "gift" as its entry point,placing the growth of adolescents in the process of interaction between individuals and gift,providing a unique perspective of growth.In this work,Ursula uses the combination of imagination and individual thinking to transform the "magic" that is common in fantasy novels into a more contradictory "gift",which is "power" and implied by the individual.The fixed survival model is discussed.Talent is a "gift",but it also limits the growth of the protagonist in the story.The removal of restrictions requires the use of their acquired experience in the process of growing up:the "embossed experience" with the body as the carrier paves the way for them to escape from predicament and pursue freedom;in this process,the contradiction between "should be" and "have done" allows them to weigh in freedom and responsibility,enriching their own moral experience;and the nourishment of knowledge throughout the entire growth process makes gift and experience blend in from the inner spiritual level.Through the interactive process of gift and experience,the subject obtains the strength and courage to re-select,and demonstrates the true self-construction consciousness.Finally,through the retrospective and transformation of gift,as well as the changes in cognitive methods,individuals actively explore ways to coexist with gift,and the subjective cognition can be truly awakened.Growth is a process of balance of power.In fantasy novels,in addition to the process of "at home—departure—retern",the protagonist can grow up in a magical and exciting adventure,and it can also take the initiative to think in a quiet,circular pattern.The power is left to the protagonist,allowing them to choose the direction of their lives.In this work,Ursula integrates her many years of thinking about identity,gender,discourse and other issues into it,and integrates the discussion of power with Taoist thought,and provides a circular flow method for the direction of power.Therefore,in the interaction of power confrontation and balance,the relative relations between Chinese and Western thinking modes,male discourse and female discourse are placed in a space of coexistence,trying to open up a possibility of dialogue,and also continues the maternal characteristics developed from the "Earthsea Cycle".
