The translation material of this practice report is Manners,Customs, and Dress During the Middle Ages and During the Renaissance period, which was written by a famous French translator, historian and journalist Paul Lacroix. The book mainly introduces the social customs, manners that took place in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance period. The first chapter mainly introduces the social situation in the Middle Ages of Europe, the relationship between people, the aristocracy and the land. The second chapter mainly introduces how the privilege squeezes the people, and how the development of the free movement competes with feudalism. This translation material belongs to historical and cultural texts, which are characterized by objectivity, popularity, knowledge and information transmission. The language features of this translation material: Firstly, there are many long sentences that cover cultural background knowledge.Secondly, there are a large number of culture-loaded words and French words in the original text. These features are all related to the characteristics of text features and the author's writing style.According to the characteristics of text and language, based on the form of the original text, the author's style and intention, the translator tries to remove the difficulties and obstacles in reading or understanding for the readers, and helps the readers to understand the meaning of the original text on the basis of the original text. Therefore, the translator chooses Peter Newmark's communicative translation and semantic translation theory as theoretical guidance to solve the translation problems of culture-loaded words, background knowledge and complex sentences. For the translation of background knowledge, the translator combines Newmark's communicative translation theory with the method of amplification. For the translation of long sentences and complex sentences, the translator combines the two translation methods to guide the translation practice. The framework of this paper is as follows: The first chapter is task description, which mainly introduces text selection, text introduction, significance of this report and translation plan. The second chapter introduces the text features, languagefeatures and styles as well as the selection of translation theories. The third chapter is a case study.Firstly, the translator classifies culture-loaded words into three categories:title translation, historical vocabulary translation and French vocabulary translation.Secondly,it is the translation of cultural background knowledge. Finally, for the translation of long sentences, the translator adopts translation methods such as addition, inversion and free translation. The fourth chapter summarizes the experience and shortcomings of this translation practice report.Through this translation practice, the translator realizes that the qualified translator should prepare well before translation. What's more, translator should have proficient translation skills, knowledge base and the ability of information screening from original text. All of these are necessary for the translator to translate well in the future.
