Teachers' professional level plays a significant role in the process of English teaching in evaluating the quality of education in junior middle schools.In order to promote English teachers' professional quality,and ensure the high quality of English teaching,it has become an important subject in quality education.However,many studies mainly focus on the theoretical analysis of teachers' professional development.Therefore,it is essential to investigate the current situation of junior middle school English teachers' professional development.Three research questions are put forward:1.What is the current situation of junior middle school English teachers' professional development?2.What are the main problems in junior middle school English teachers' professional development?3.What are the main factors that influence junior middle school English teachers' professional development?In view of the three research questions,this thesis is concerned with an investigation with instruments of questionnaire and interview to study the status of professional development of 320 junior middle teachers in thirty-seven schools in eight counties and cities in Qiannan Miao and Buyi Autonomous Prefecture..Through the analysis of the data,when it comes to the person information of teachers,the percentage of male and female English teachers in junior middle schools is seriously imbalanced,which accounts for 22.8% and 77.2 separately.From the perspective of professional knowledge,29.7% of middle school English teachers do not have a good command of relevant knowledge and requirements of English curriculum standards.55.9% of teachers have poor command of English pedagogical content knowledge.63.1%,72.1%,57.4% and 79.4% of teachers have poor command of phonetic knowledge,lexical knowledge,cross-cultural knowledge and cultural background knowledge,respectively.As for general knowledge,48.5% of teachers do not know much about natural science.The ability to organize classroom teaching in English,evaluate students' development,do teaching and research and respond to unexpected classroom events need to be improved.The teachers with poor ability in these aspects account for 35.5%,76.4%,63.3% and 50%,respectively.In terms of the source of pressure and the motivation of teachers' professional development,the factors from students and teachers' updated knowledge and improvement of quality greatly influences junior middle school English teachers' professional development,accounting for 66.3% and 57.2% respectively.As for professional development awareness,80.9% of junior middle school English teachers are satisfied with their own current situation of professional development or unawareness of it.52.5 % of teachers believe that heavy task and excessive workload are the main negative factor influencing their professional development.Aiming at the current situation and the problems,the suggestions are put forward as follows.Junior middle school English teachers are supposed to update their professional knowledge and ideas timely,improve professional ability,enhance their professional awareness and professional affect,and strengthen the abilities to teach and research so as to promote their own professional development.Junior middle schools are supposed to strengthen the humanistic management and improve the incentive mechanism.The administrative departments of education are supposed to enhance the quality of training and give active support to junior middle schools.
