A Comparative Study Of Howard Goldblatt Couple's Explicitation Translation Strategies Of Liu Zhenyun's Novels

In recent years,there have been many studies on explicitation and systemic functional grammar theory.The research on Howard Goldblatt's translation works has emerged in an endless stream.Among them,Howard Goldblatt's translation of Mo Yan's works has long been a concern.However,the explicitation research on the translation works of Howard Goldblatt's couples has appeared only a few.It is rare to analyze the two novels of the same author using the systemic functional grammar.The purpose of this paper is to compare the similarities and differences between the Howard Goldblatt couple's explicitation translation of The Cook,the Crook,and the Real Estate Tycoon and I did not Kill My Husband.The research question in this paper is Howard Goldblatt couples' translation similarities and differences on the quantity,extent,mode,content and motivation of the two novels.Explicitation is to “express the information implied in the original language in the target language,which can be obtained in the original text according to the context or context”(Vinay & Darbelnet,1995: 342).According to Huang(2015),functional discourse as the core semantic explicitation analysis framework,the explicitation division of content can be divided into three aspects: ideational functional explicitation,interpersonal functional explicitation and textual functional explicitation.From the content,explicitation can be divided into addition and explanation.Based on this,a comparative study of quantitative and qualitative combination of two translations is conducted.The investigation found that the same points are that,in terms of quantity,both novels' quantity in explanation is more than the number of additions.In terms of content,the number of ideational functional explicitation is the most obvious,followed by the textual functional explicitation,and finally the interpersonal functional explicitation.The difference is that,in terms of quantity,the translator's total number of explicitation translations for The Cook,the Crook,and the Real Estate Tycoon is significantly higher than I did not Kill My Husband.In terms of extent,the translator's level of explicitation translation for The Cook,the Crook,and the Real Estate Tycoon is higher than that of I didnot Kill My Husband.Whether it is the number of examples or the magnitude of each example,the degree of explicitation in The Cook,the Crook,and the Real Estate Tycoon is higher than that in I did not Kill My Husband.In terms of content,the ideational functional explicitation in The Cook,the Crook,and the Real Estate Tycoon is more varied.The emphasis on ideational functional explicitation helps readers to understand the context and clear dyslexia,and helps readers understand the cultural context of Chinese novels.The translator's motivation is to preserve the language features of the author Liu Zhenyun's novels as much as possible and to preserve the Chinese culture in the original text as much as possible.It is also found that Howard Goldblatt and Howard Goldblatt's his wife paid great attention to the literary expression of the work itself.By clarifying the specific person relationship and character name in the effect,in order for the reader to understand the plot and the character,the translation is always considered by the reader.The translators are very similar to the translators who pay attention to the true expression of the Chinese face described in the two novels,and truly express the feelings of the modern Chinese society that the author Liu Zhenyun wants to convey through his works.This shows Howard Goldblatt.The couple's reservations about Chinese culture.The significance of this paper is to enrich our understanding of the translation strategies used by Howard Goldblatt in translation,that is,the translator's translation tendency and subjective initiative in translation.From the perspective of translation,the scope of explicit research has been broadened.It will help to deepen our understanding of the causes and effects of manifestation.It is a useful exploration of the combination of translation strategies and systemic functional linguistics.
