| Liu Zhenyun is one of the most important authors in the current wave of “Chinese Literature Going Global”.Many of his works have been favored and translated by sinologist Howard Goldblatt. However,so far there is little interest in the study of Howard Goldblatt’s translation of Liu Zhenyun’s work.Focusing on case studies from Howard Goldblatt and his wife Sylvia Li-chun Lin’s co-translation of I Am Not Pan Jinlian, this thesis has discussed the English reproduction of the original styles, aiming to enrich the diachronic study of Howard Goldblatt’s translation and shed some light upon overseas dissemination of contemporary Chinese literature. The literature review of Chapter One sorts out previous studies on Liu Zhenyun’s writing motif and styles, the reviews of novel I Am Not Pan Jinlian,as well as Howard Goldblatt and his translation.Chapter Two is about the reproduction of irony displayed in characters’ name and nickname and the pauses and parrot in character’s utterance.Chapter Three discusses the reproduction of the author’s twisted and repetitive style in language, plot and narration without impacting readers’ interest.Chapter Four analyzes the reproduction of the original work’s tangled folk discourse and officialdom discourse to reveal the importance of register and shift in register in reproducing the original style.Generally speaking,Mr.and Mrs.Goldblatt’s co-translation is fluent and lively in language and loyal to the original styles. However, the two translators’ avoidance of using footnotes and endnotes reduces the ironic effects in certain cases;the translators’ pursuit of readability causes the loss of the author’s deliberate twisted and repetitive style;the translators’ sensitivity over the shift in register is to be improved. In a nutshell,Mr.and Mrs.Goldblatt’s co-translation can be considered exemplary.Their cooperation and translation strategies provide a reference for the dissemination of contemporary Chinese literature. However, the acceptance of their translation is to be surveyed and studied. |
