On Howard Goldblatt's Translation Of I Did Not Kill My Husband From The Perspective Of Eco-Translatology

I Did Not Kill My Husband is the latest masterpiece of the famous Chinese writer Liu Zhenyun.The English version was completed by the famous American translator Howard Goldblatt and published in 2014.At present,the study of the original novel in the academic circles is quite sufficient,but the study of the English version is very limited.As the chief translator of Chinese contemporary literature,Goldblatt's translation represents his latest translation ideas and methods and is the latest attempt of Goldblatt.In recent decades,human society has gradually converted from industrial civilization to ecological civilization.Against this background,Professor Hu Gengshen proposes the Approach to Translation as Adaptation and Selection,and then develops into a more mature and perfect theory — Eco-translatology.Eco-translatology emphasizes translators-centeredness and states that translation is the process of adaptation and selection in translational eco-environment.Eco-translatology provides a new theoretical guidance for translation behavior.This thesis takes the English version of I Did Not Kill My Husband as the study object,and Eco-translatology as its theoretical basis.First of all,the study explores two translational eco-environments Goldblatt adapts to: the translational eco-environment of the source text(carnival and twisted style and complex plots;the social background centering on the petition system and bureaucracy;the folk customs of northern rural areas)and the translational eco-environment of the target text including the preference and aesthetic standards of target readers and the target culture.Basing on that,the thesis further discusses two stages of Goldblatt's translation process,namely the selective adaptation and the adaptive selection.It is found that in the pre-translation process(selective adaptation stage),Goldblatt has a keen interest in the novel I Did Not Kill My Husband.At the same time,the bilingual and bicultural identity and rich translation experience in a more open and active translation environment qualify him for good translations.In the second stage,which is also the focus of the study,this thesis centers on Goldblatt's adaptive selection in linguistic,cultural,and communicative dimensions with the purpose of adapting to translational eco-environments.Through the study above,it finds that Goldblatt's adaptive selection and selective adaptation are all based on the translational eco-environments of the original text and the target text,which reflects Goldblatt's emphasis on three-dimensional transformationagreement in the translation process.Through the strategies of domestication and foreignization,and the specific methods such as omission and substitution,the original style is reproduced.And the translation can be accepted in its target culture,and eventually achieves the harmonious coexistence between two translational eco-environments.This study will provide some insights into Goldblatt's translation philosophies and methods and even the translation of Chinese literature.At the same time,theoretically speaking,this study will be able to in some ways contribute to the feasibility and explanatory power of Eco-translatology.
