The world has entered a modern society of globalization;translation has become an important approach of communication and association.Scientific translation has made great contribution to communication of science and technology. The translation theories from functional perspective are of significant importance for the guidance of scientific translation. This thesis is a translation report on scientific texts based on functional translation theories. The functional theories of translation from Germany provides guidance to the scientific translation from macro-viewpoint,and the functional translation theory based on Halliday's systemic functional grammar can give specific guidance to solve the problems during translating.Scientific texts focus on representing objects and facts.According to the text type theory proposed by Reiss, this kind of text is informative text type, featured with accuracy, objectiveness, and conciseness. The translation should be content oriented and focus on objects and facts. The author finished translation tasks that consist of more than twenty thousand words/characters of scientific texts. The effective way and translation techniques to realize the ideational function, interpersonal function and textual function in the translation process are studied from the perspective of systemic functional grammar, aiming at finding appropriate translation techniques for scientific texts. The author integrates related theories with translation practice and seeks for the semantic equivalence of the source text and the target text in the perspective of the three meta-functions.The practice and research suggests that reorganizations of the grammatical constituent and discourse structure are needed to realize the ideational function, interpersonal function and textual function. It is found that the process of normalization or ideational metaphor is a process of packing information, can achieve the conciseness of scientific texts in Chinese-English translation.During translating, proper adjustments of discourse based on the actual context benefits the understanding and translation of texts.Passive voice, objective metaphor of modality and thematized comment construction can achieve objectivity in English scientific texts.Passive voice need to be converted in translation. In Chinese-English translation, objective modality metaphors and thematized comment construction need to be adopted to convey the author's views or comments.Additionally, the ideational metaphor formed by nominalization can ensure the accuracy of scientific texts.
