Foreignization In Howard Goldblatt's Translation Of Tales Of Hulan River:Post-colonial Perspective

Tales of Hulan River is Xiao Hong's magnum opus.It is not only an autobiographical novel,but also a unique native novel.The unique perspective of a child shows the social features and customs of Hulan County in northeastern China in the 1920 s and 1930 s,as well as the suffering and ignorance of the grassroots in China.Howard Goldblatt,a famous American scholar and translator of contemporary Chinese literature,is the most productive western scholar in this field.He has translated the most contemporary Chinese literary works in recent years.From the perspective of post-colonialism theory,this paper analyzes Howard Goldblatt's foreignization strategy in the translation of Tales of Hulan River.And it makes a detailed analysis and elaboration of the specific foreignization translation phenomena in Tales of Hulan River from the aspects of material selection,language and culture respectively.Then,combining it with the theory of translation sociology,this paper analyzes the factors that influences translators' translation in the context of the post-colonial world the main strategies used in translation of Chinese cultural classics abroad.Post-colonial translation studies began in the late 1980 s,which is a new perspective of translation studies.This theory examines translation under different historical conditions from the perspective of post-colonialism.It pays attention to the power struggle and power operation between two cultures hidden behind the translation.It holds that there are power differences between different cultures and that there has never been a real equal dialogue between different cultures.The post-colonial translation theory focuses on the external constraints on the process of the translated text and the subversive effect on the target culture after the generation of the translated text.Tales of Hulan River is chosen as the research object because it is reasonable and feasible to discuss it within the framework of post-colonial theory from the aspects of culture and language.Additionally,Howard Goldblatt adopts a distinct foreignization strategy in Tales of Hulan River.It is the first novel translated by Howard Goldblatt,who has a dual cultural identity.Therefore this study promises to be of great research value tothe translation of Chinese culture.Translation strategies fundamentally demonstrate the translator's ethical attitude towards foreign language texts and cultures.Foreignization strategy can effectively show cultural differences,resist racial centralism and cultural hegemony in British and American countries,and promote equal cultural exchanges.Moreover,foreignization strategy does not mean literal translation.Foreignization can not only show the target language readers different cultures,but also achieve readability.
