This study aims to solve the main problems faced by rural primary and secondary school English teachers,promote the overall development of rural primary and secondary school English teachers,and contribute to rural education.Since the time of setting up English courses in primary and secondary schools is not long,the popularization of English teachers in rural areas will be even later.Therefore,the professional development of English teachers in rural primary and secondary schools is a new topic.At present,the research on this aspect is still very weak,lacking the corresponding theoretical analysis and empirical support.Undoubtedly,this research is of great practical significance to solve the problem of teachers' professional development in rural primary and secondary schools within the framework of the theory of teachers' professional development and the theory of teachers' career stages.This study takes questionnaires and interviews as the main research methods,and takes rural primary and secondary school English teachers as the research object.It uses a combination of theory and empirical methods to visit 8 rural primary and secondary schools in two counties in Guangxi.There are five dimensions in this research questionnaire: professional knowledge,professional ability,professional belief,self-professional development awareness,and learning and training during teaching.The three research questions addressed in the present study are:(1)What are the current situation of English teachers' professional development in primary andsecondary schools?(2)What are the influencing factors of English teachers' professional development in rural primary and secondary schools?(3)What are the major problems for the professional development of English teachers in rural primary and secondary schools?Through the study,the author has found out the following results: firstly,the overall situation of rural primary and secondary school English teachers is not balanced,their professional development awareness is weak,and the professional ability is lacking;secondly,the factors affecting the professional development of rural primary and secondary English teachers include: professional knowledge,professional ability,professional belief,self-awareness of professional development and advanced training;thirdly,the main problems are: different levels of professional knowledge,insufficient professional ability,professional development if not strong,lack of self-awareness of professional development,lack of development planning and an effective external environment and mechanism.
