With the rapid development of global economy, air pollution and climate change have become two major environmental crises threatening human survival and sustainable development. In less than 30 years,China has been moving towards an economic power at an amazing speed, and the environmental problems including air pollution and climate change it is facing are unprecedented. The United States has been several decades in advance in terms of economic development and has come up with some effective measures in coping with environmental crises and their severe impact on human health and socio-economic development since the 1950 s.Thus,so far as environmental protection and policy are concerned,U.S.started at an early stage and has evolved and implemented a more sophisticated and comprehensive system.Hence, research and translation of its material may have great relevance and significance to present China embarking upon anti-pollution campaign.Against this background, the translator decides to translate Environmental Policy and Public Health: Air Pollution,Climate Change and Wilderness which mainly introduces the adverse health effects of air pollution and climate change as well as the environmental policy response of the United States to profit from the advanced experience. In the light of Nida's functional equivalence theory and on the basis of personal translation practice, this report studies the characteristics and translation difficulties of environment-oriented texts and puts forward a series of practical translation methods ranging from lexical, syntactic to discourse levels. To achieve functional equivalencein translation, which is defined as reproducing in the target language the closest natural equivalent of the source-language information, author applies different strategies by taking into account of their appropriateness at three levels. At lexical level, the translator adopts amplification, conversion, diction and ellipsis strategies;at syntactic level, the translator employs linear translation, conversion of voice, rearrangement and combination so as to eliminate the differences between Chinese and English expression habits;additionally,in order to realize discourse cohesion and coherence, addition, repetition and rearrangement are used at discourse level. In addition, this report summarizes the achievements and limitations of the translation project and indicates the feasibility of functional equivalence theory in environmental text translation practice with detailed cases and analysis.Ultimately, through the translation of this book, the translator hopes to provide useful reference materials for environmental protection course in China and to supply some reference and enlightenment for the translation of environmental English texts.
