Discourse Cohesion In English-chinese Translation

Since the 1960's,the remarkable development of discourse linguistics has greatly enriched translation studies.Translation unit has been expanded from words,sentences to paragraphs and discourses.Instead of being completely faithful to the source text,translation standard also has changed to the equivalence of cohesion and coherence between the source text and the target text from the perspective of communication.According to Halliday and Hasan's Systemic Function theory,as the most important features of discourse,cohesion and coherence,are the research core of discourse linguistics.Therefore,in the process of translation,it is necessary to study the respective devices of cohesion in source language and target language and the differences between them to achieve proper conversion.On the grounds of the Cohesion Theory proposed by Halliday and Hasan,this paper analyzes the application of discourse cohesion in translation of informative text(English-Chinese translation),the excerpts from The Crisis for Young People.Five cohesive devices----reference,substitution,ellipsis,conjunction and lexical cohesion----are applied to achieve fluency of the target text.Various cohesive devices are methods while discourse coherence is the ultimate object.Therefore,it is of great practical significance to find the instructive role of cohesive devices for discourse coherence.
