As one of the four major literary genres, novel occupies an important position in people's cultural life, which usually reflects the social life through storyline and environmental description. With the ever deepening cultural exchanges between countries, more and more foreign novels are available to Chinese people, posing greater challenges to its translation. Based on the textual cohesion theory, and taking the translation of The Ghost at the Wedding as an example, this thesis intends to give a comparison, analysis and conclusion of the cohesive devices in both languages involved, and tries to choose proper translation strategies and expressions to rebuild the translated text, so that the readers of the translation would grasp the original text to the greatest extent. The textual cohesion plays a critical role in the construction of the text as a whole. In another word, with text being the basic translation unit, cohesion will make the core element. Therefore, in order to understand the source text (ST) and deliver a cohesive target text (TT), the author must be aware of the cohesive devices in ST and TT. And the gaping differences between English and Chinese give rise to distinctive characteristics in the cohesion systems of both languages. Based on the translation of The Ghost at the Wedding, the author will mainly talk about problems she confronted during the translation process and the ways she adopted to deal with those problems.Textual cohesion runs through novel translation from beginning to end, and the author hopes that this thesis can be used for reference for future novel translation.
