English and Chinese are two different types of languages, and this paper deals with the application of discourse cohesion in English-Chinese translation. The analyzed texts are excerpts from The Different Drum: Community Making and Peace written by M.Scott Peck.Firstly, the author reviews the differences of cohesive devices in English and Chinese.Secondly, the author explores on the possible ways of dealing with the differences of cohesive devices based on translation practice, including ellipsis of the corresponding component, omission of repetition, and the implicitness of conjunction. The results show that English and Chinese are different since the former is hypotactic while the latter paratactic. The cohesive devices for English tend to be more explicit and diversified, while the Chinese cohesive devices are more implicit. In conclusion, the author proposes corresponding translation strategies and achieves the equivalent effect of translation.
