This is an English-Chinese translation report. The source text is the first seven chapters in America for Beginners.America for Beginners is the first novel of Leah Franqui,an American playwright. The book is a bestseller in Amazon in July 2018 and has no Chinese version after it was published. With humor and subtlety, the novel describes the story of Pival leaving for America to find her son by traveling. The cultural differences between India and America are mainly mentioned in the book. This translation is under the guidance of relevance theory. The theory points out that translation is a kind of verbal communication, which follows ostensive-inferential model.Combining relevance theory, the translator divides the translation difficulties in translation into lexical and syntactic aspects. The difficulties at lexical level come first, including the translation of culture-loaded words and parts of speech.Secondly, the difficulties at syntactic level include the translation of some simple sentences and long and complex sentences.Under the guidance of relevance theory, the translator uses some corresponding translation methods to solve these translation difficulties. At lexical level, the translator adopts annotation and conversion. At syntactic level, the translator employs free translation, amplification, omission, division and reinventing sentence structures.According to analyzing and solving the translation difficulties in translation, the translator has gained a lot and found some limitations. The translator should keep on working hard to enrich comprehensive knowledge, increase practical experiences, and improve the ability of translation practice in order to become a qualified translator.
