In recent years, many foreign non-fiction literature books have got great success all over the world. The source text of this English to Chinese translation practice is selected from The Empire of Necessity — Slavery, Freedom, and Deception in the New World. It was released in early 2014, and quickly topped the annual booklist of The Wall Street Journal. Moreover, it is a bestseller of the United States in 2014, receiving a favorable response. The work belongs to non-fiction literature. It presents the "freedom" and "deception" of the slavery in the 19th century. It is the first time for the author to translate non-fiction literature independently. There are many difficulties in aspects of this translation practice, including more proper noun, long sentences, difficult sentences and how to reproduce the style of the original language. Based on the above four difficulties, the author analyzes the appropriate translation methods from annotation translation of proper noun, translation of long sentences and difficult sentences as well as representation of the original language style. It is a great challenge for translators to translate these outstanding works into Chinese, so as to meet Chinese readers’demands. With the purpose of fulfilling proper translation of the non-fiction literature, the author tries to make the translation easily accepted by Chinese readers. At the same time, the translator hopes that readers can not only learn information about history by reading non-fiction literature, but also get more aesthetic feelings.
