A Study Of The Translation Strategies In The English Version Of The Three-Body Problem-From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

In 2015,“The Three-Body Problem”,the English translation of a Chinese science fiction“San Ti”(????in Chinese)won the best novel of the Hugo Awards,which was a milestone for the Chinese science fictions.The great success of“The Three-Body Problem”abroad is inseparable from its translator Ken Liu who is also a science fiction writer and a skilled bilingual speaker with fluent English and Chinese cultural background.Therefore,this thesis selecting Liu Cixin's“San Ti”and Ken Liu's translation“The Three-Body Problem”as the research objects to study the translation of Chinese science fiction is meaningful and representative.This thesis will use the three rules of Skopos theory as the theoretical framework,and the case analysis method to study the translation strategies of “The Three-Body Problem”,and analyze and explain the translation strategies from the perspective of the three rules of Skopos theory.This research aims to find out(1)what is the significance of studying the English translation of “The Three-Body Problem”? Through comparative analysis,the author summarizes:(2)in the process of the translation,the translator adopts effective methods such as reorganization,literal translation,translator's notes,free translation,omission,and addition so as to realize the writer's and translator's purpose and reproduce the cultural connotation of the original text and the characteristics of Chinese culture.Finally,based on the three rules of Skopos theory the author can explain those translation strategies revealed from “The Three-Body Problem”.“San Ti” as a literary work,its translation is communicative.Compared with other studies focusing on a certain perspective,this thesis is to analyze the translation strategies of the English translation of “San Ti” more comprehensively.The author hopes to find out the translation strategies through the study of “San Ti” and its English translation in order to provide a reference to the translation of Chinese science fictions in the future,as well as to promote Chinese science fictions to the world.
