"Empire" and "space" and "people" are main factors in the colonial city.Colonial city is using the power of the "empire" to reform the city of "space" in order to achieve control of the "people".As a tool of colonial cities,"Urban space" is also important part of our research in the19 th century colonial history. In the conversion of colonial city, the urban conversion of Algiers made by France during Napoleon Bonaparte was very representative. Before the 19 century,Algiers was still an Islamic city with a pirate economy under heavy fortifications.“ Closedness ” is the theme of its urban space.Until 1830,when the French colonial forces occupied Algiers, the “ closedness ”gradually collapsed. In 1848,the Second Republic of France was established, and Napoleon Bonaparte become the President. Then he began to implement the policy of assimilation in Algeria to achieve integration with France. After taking office as the Second Emperor in1852,he introduced the policy of “Arab Kingdom”,hoping to integrate Algeria into the France track.Meanwhile,a growing number of European immigrants moved to Algiers, making the original urban space unable to carry a steady steam of people. It is imperative to transform the unban space of Algiers.Since 1841,under the appeal of European immigrants and the support of the colonial government,Algiers had undergone a formal transformation, which mainly includes the expansion of the urban space, repair of the urban roads and opening of public space.Until 1870,Algiers took a brand-new look, with elegant European new town and port, perfect road system and the geometrically-shaped European square. The transformed city embodies the image of order, organization and right supreme, highlighting the glory of the French Empire. As a colonial city Algiers, the conversion of it wss essentially for colonial rule.As an important base for France in north Africa the practice of the transformation of colonial city has also been applied to other cities in Algeria, such as B?ne(today called Annaba)and Constantine. It can be seen that urban construction can tie up the urban space, and converting to the imperial power.
