In the early days of American independence, its trade activities in the Mediterranean were hindered by pirate countries in North Africa. In 1785,Algiers pirates looted American merchant ships, imprisoned mariners and then demanded ransom from the United States. The Algiers crisis broke out.Common seamen and businessmen of America played an important role in the spread of crisis news. The diplomatic negotiations of the U.S.government have been slow to work, and the crisis has aroused heated discussions in the domestic news, literature and art circles. The initial development of the early American “public sphere” shaped domestic public opinion. In this dynamic process, with the help of domestic newspapers, pamphlets and other public media, more and more Americans participated in the discussions and activities of the crisis. In the process of interaction between the elite and the people, the political elite used the participation of the people to promote the decision-making of the government, which became the internal “driving force” for the solution of the Algiers crisis. In this process, the crisis triggered people to think about the role and identity of the United States in the world, and the national consciousness has been greatly enhanced. The United States is no longer a British colony. It must find ways to protect its overseas trade and strengthen its ties with the world as an independent individual. In this sense,as a long-lasting diplomatic issue, the Algiers crisis at the end of the 18 th century strengthened the national identity of the American people to a certain extent.
