In early19th century, Charles Gutzlaff entered the territory of China.He was the first German missionary of Protestant Church to do missionary work in China.Meanwhile he is also one of the few China hands.This thesis studies on the life and Chinese views of Gutzlaff and then analysis the highlights and shortages of Gutzalffs Chinese views,thus exploring the implications to teaching foreigners Chinese.This thesis is divided into four chapters.The connecting thread of Chapter1is Gutzlaff s Chinese study.This chapter focuses on Gutzalffs Chinese study before he came to China and his Chinese activities in China. Chapter2mainly analysis the academic and time backgrounds of Gutzlaffs Chinese views.And Chapter3elaborates Gutzalffs Chinese views based on his grammar book "Notice on Chinese Grammar","China Opened" and thesis "Remarks on the Chinese Language" which publicated in "Chinese Mission Advocate".And then go step further to describe his Chinese views from three angles:sounds,characters and grammars.Last chapter compares Gutzlaff s views with Robert Morrison and Joshua Marshman,thus concluding highlights and shortages of Gutzlaff s Chinese views. And ultimately discuss the influence and enlightenments of these views.
