A Report On The C-E Translation Of The Folklore Of The Zhuang People (Chapter ?)

The Zhuang nationality has the largest population among all ethnic groups in China and enjoys a long history.Undoubtedly,the culture contained in Zhuang folklore is an important part of Chinese culture.Under the background of China's strategy of strengthening the building of culture and enhancing cultural confidence,the foreign translation of Zhuang folklore has ushered in favorable opportunities.The Folklore of the Zhuang People,written in a plain language and simple style,is a book that gives an overall introduction to the folk customs of the Zhuangs.Chapter VI of this book mainly demonstrates the brilliant folk art of the Zhuang people,for example,the folk song culture,the culture of Third Sister Liu,the Zhuang operas and folk musical instruments of the Zhuangs.To publicize and spread the folklore culture of the Zhuangs to the outside world is beneficial to the Zhuang nationality in constructing a relatively stable national identity of culture and advancing mutual understanding between the Zhuang people and other nations all over the world,thus gradually improving the power of cultural discourse of the Chinese nation.The report gives analysis and conclusions to the English translation practice of The Folklore of the Zhuang People(Chapter VI).Under the guidance of Susan Bassnett's cultural translation theory,the author adopted foreignization as the leading translation strategy while domestication the subordinate one to ensure better international publicity of Zhuang culture.Meanwhile,considering the difference between Chinese and English,she exerted a set of translation methods and skills,such as literal translation with annotations,transliteration with annotations,free translation,amplification as well as omission so on and so forth to make sure the accuracy,fluency,and readability of the target text.The report is composed of five chapters.Chapter one introduces the translation project and illustrates the significance of it;the second chapter focuses on translation preparation;the next chapter displays Susan Bassnett's cultural translation theory and translation strategies;chapter four concentrates on case analysis which includes the translation of culture-loaded words,the proper use of parallel texts,translation skills and the intervention of the translator;the last chapter summarizes the experience gained from and shortcomings existing in this translation practice.The author believes that the translation orientation in China is more inclined to be Chinese-to-foreign-language translation in years to come due to the fact that with the enhancement of China's national strength,there will be an increase of demands for the foreign translation of Chinese culture.This translation practice is a beneficial try and a positive exploration for the foreign translation of Zhuang folklore,which,as the author believe,will offer some references for translators who are interested in foreign translation of Zhuang folklore.
