A Survey On The Current Situation Of English Teachers Cultivating Students' English Key Competencies In Cenxi Senior High Schools

With the further development of curriculum reform,English key competencies have become the objective of senior English curriculum.In order to cultivate talents who can meet the needs of life-long development and social development,English Curriculum Standard for High Schools(2017 edition)points out the cultivation of students' English key competencies,namely,language competence,cultural awareness,thinking quality and learning ability.For better cultivating students' English key competencies and improving teaching quality,it is necessary to understand the current situation of senior high school English teachers' cultivation of students' English key competencies,analyze the existing problems and put forward suggestions for improvement.On the basis of Holistic Education Theory,the research was conducted to investigate 141 English teachers from eight senior high schools in Cenxi,Guangxi Province.After the analysis of the questionnaire,20 teachers were randomly selected for the interview.Based on the definition of English key competencies proposed by English Curriculum Standard for High Schools(2017 edition),the questionnaire was compiled,including four dimensions: language competence,cultural awareness,thinking quality and learning ability.This research focuses on the following two questions:(1)What is the general situation of the cultivation of students' English key competencies among senior high school English teachers in Cenxi?(2)What is the current situation of the cultivation of students' English key competencies among different genders,teaching ages,professional titles and educational levels? Are there any differences among these groups?The results show that:(1)There is still room for improvement in the cultivation of students' English key competencies;(2)The cultivation of students' English key competencies is imbalanced,which tended to focus on competencies that are directly related to exams;(3)There are significant differences in the cultivation of language competence,cultural awareness and thinking quality among genders,teaching ages and professional titles.(4)There is no statistical difference in the cultivation of students' English key competencies among different educational levels.According to the interview results,the factors leading to the above current status can be summarized as: The traditional examination and evaluation system restricts the overall cultivation of students' English key competencies;Due to the abstract concept and the lack of teaching instruction,it is difficult for teachers to cultivate students' English key competencies in the actual teaching;Limited teaching periods and heavy teaching tasks make it impossible for teachers to give equal consideration to the cultivation of language competence,cultural awareness,thinking quality and learning ability.For the above reasons,the author provides some suggestions from the perspectives of both schools and teachers.Suggestions for schools:(1)Setting up diversified evaluation criterion;(2)Providing training on teaching practice.Suggestions for teachers:(1)Strengthening learning and reflection to improve teaching quality;(2)Integrating the cultivation of four English key competencies by making full use of the limited teaching periods.In terms of language competence,listening,speaking,viewing skills,and pragmatic knowledge should not be ignored so as to promote the balanced development of students' language competence;With regard to cultural awareness,teachers are expected to fully excavate the spiritual connotation of the textbooks,and at the same time,carry out literature appreciation class,which enables students to perceive the values conveyed by the literary works;As for thinking quality,designing questions at different levels is conducive to developing students' creativity and inferring ability;In terms of learning ability,mobile learning is introduced to improve students' ability to obtain information through multiple channels.
