A Case Study On Cultivating Senior High School Students' Cultural Awareness In The New Curriculum Standard

In recent years,the cultivation of cultural awareness among senior high school students has received increased attention.And people nowadays have a deeper understanding of the relationship between foreign language learning and cultural learning.Many phenomena show that cultivating students' cultural awareness does not only focus on college students any more.And the case studies in related field also increase year by year.So,how does young English teachers cultivating their students' cultural awareness in the background of new curriculum standard.This paper takes three different senior high schools(model senior high schools,high-level private schools and ordinary suburban middle schools)in Guiyang as background of the case.Three novice teachers within three years of teaching experience are selected as case samples,they are Mr.Lei,Ms.Zhang,and Mr.Li,respectively.This case study adopts qualitative and quantitative research methods and takes interview outline,questionnaire,self-assessment scale and SPSS 21.0 as research tool to conduct the experiment with an aim to answer the following questions:(1)Based on the new curriculum standard,how do novice teachers cultivate senior high school students' cultural awareness? And what difficulties have they encountered?(2)What are the differences among different novice teachers during their processes of cultivating high school students' cultural awareness?The results show that in terms of cultural teaching,three young teachers tend to use a variety of teaching methods in combination,rather than a fixed single method.For the major teaching method they adopted,Li mainly used the cultural introduction method;Zhang mainly adopted the cultural contrastive method,and Lei employed the cultural experiencing method by virtue of new media.After a semester of cultural awareness cultivation,students have a positive affirmation of the teaching feedback of the three new teachers.Most of the students' cultural understanding and knowledge received a certain improvement.Among them,the students of Ms.Zhang's are the most improved ones.Based on the research findings,group of the young teachers represented by three novice teachers have the main problems like insufficient experience in cultural teaching and lack of teaching training in a systematic way.Finally,the paper puts forward some suggestions for young teachers in carrying out cultural awareness cultivation research in the future.
