According to the English Curriculum Standards for Senior High Schools(2017),the core literacy of English is composed of language ability,cultural awareness,thinking quality and learning ability.As a value orientation,cultural awareness is the key factor to improve students’ cultural understanding and identity,and to cultivate students’ cross-cultural ability and communication ability.The English Curriculum Standard for Compulsory Education(2011)also emphasizes the importance of cultivating students’ cultural awareness.Therefore,it is necessary to cultivate students’ cultural awareness in English teaching.However,in view of the current situation of English Teaching in China,the attention paid to the high school and college students’ cultivation and research of cultural awareness is relatively higher,while the attention paid to the cultivation of inter-cultural awareness of junior high school students is far from enough,and the related research is less.Therefore,this study explores the cultivation of cultural awareness in junior high school English teaching.This paper expounds the importance of cultural awareness cultivation in junior middle school English teaching and then the researchers conduct an investigation and research in a middle school in L City by consulting the relevant literature on cultural awareness cultivation under the guidance of constructivism theory,Sapir Whorf hypothesis theory and cross-cultural communication theory.Data collection,collation and analysis are done through questionnaires,interviews,course observation and other means.The research mainly focuses on three questions:(1)what is the current situation of the cultivation of students’ cultural awareness in junior high school English teaching?(2)What are the factors that affect the cultivation of cultural awareness in junior middle school English teaching?(3)What suggestions should be put forward for the cultivation of cultural awareness in junior high school English teaching?It is found that the current situation of cultural awareness cultivation in junior middle school English teaching is not optimistic via the research.Although the teachers generally have the awareness of cultural teaching,it is difficult to cultivate the cultural awareness due to the influence of the cultural quality of English teachers,the cultural environment of English courses and the evaluation system of English teaching.Therefore,in order to better cultivate cultural awareness in junior high school English teaching,we should firstly improve English teachers’ cultural literacy by correcting the deviation of subject understanding,mining the cultural materials of teaching materials and broadening the ways of cultural learning.Another task for us is to create a cultural environment for curriculum implementation,including optimizing the school cultural atmosphere and strengthening the classroom cultural teaching.Finally,we should strengthen the cultural orientation of curriculum evaluation and integrate cultural factors into language evaluation.
