| US Highway 66,one of the most famous roads in American history,has had an important impact on the economic and cultural history of the United States.It is called the "mother road" by native people.From its rise to the decline,it witnessed the American history of 20 th century,people’s lives,their happiness and suffering.Michael Wallis is an American journalist and famous historian.On the 75 th anniversary of Route 66,he wrote the book Route 66: The Mother Road 75 th Anniversary Edition.This book introduces the history of Route 66,and how it changed the economy and culture of the United States.At last,it introduces how and why Route66 come to the end.However,the road still has important value and significance currently.This book enjoys very much popularity in the U.S.,and given its cultural and historical value,a translation of it will hopefully open a window for the Chinese readers to view one aspect of American culture.This translation report is based on the translating practice on the first two chapters of the book.The report consists of four parts: The first part is the introduction of the translation project,including the background of the original text and the author,the significance of translation and the text analysis.The second part elaborates translation process,that is the translation preparation,translation theory and related translation strategies.The third part mainly introduces the difficulties I encountered in the translation and how to solve the problem using semantic translation,communicative translation and related translation methods by Newmark.Specific examples were also given and analyzed in this part.The last part is the summary of the translation,including suitable strategies employed during the translation,as well as the shortcomings and aspects that need to be strengthened in my subsequent translation career. |
