During the Japanese Colonial Period,a group of Taiwanese left for mainland China due to resentment for the Japanese occupation and longing for the Chinese Revolution.Quite a number of them had been part of the KMT regime and made efforts to battle Japanese. After the Anti-Japanese War exploded, some of them had devoted themselves in this war, formed some anti-Japanese groups in South-eastern coast.Afterwards,in order to liberate people in the occupied territories(Taiwan included),the KMT regime started to integrate and support them, which help these Taiwanese with common interests formed a political group in the KMT regime. They did a variety of publicity for the recovery of Taiwan, called for the KMT regime to reestablish the Taiwan provincial government and planned a lot to take over and govern Taiwan.Meanwhile, this group were being divided by supporters from various political factions within the KMT.After the recovery of Taiwan, most of them returned Taiwan following the KMT regime and were called Half-Mountain People(Banshan)due to their experience in mainland China.Banshan had linked the exotic KMT regime and Taiwan locals, trying to balance the public opinion and the implementation of governmental policies. They actively took part in political and cultural activities, boosted their power and indeed had a great effect on politics, economics and social reconstruction in postwar Taiwan. However, this politically rising group actually squeezed some locals out of political arenas. In addition to this, their co-operation with the government in the 228 Incident aroused increasing dissatisfaction of Taiwanese. Some Banshan even initiated military crackdown, which failed themselves in communicating the citizens with the govemment. This dissertation deals with political activities of these Taiwanese and their relationship with the KMT regime. The whole thesis is composed of three chapters. The first chapter illustrates two sources of these Taiwanese and how they worked in the KMT regime. This chapter also focuses on the changing attitude of the KMT regime to these Taiwanese, which started with neglect and ended up with support.Meanwhile, this chapter will explain some intragroup conflicts and intergroup conflicts, concerning organizational relationsh ps,action strategies, budget allocation, etc.,in The Taiwan Revolutionary League and The Taiwan Party Headquarter. The second chapter introduces how these Taiwanese worked in the anti-Japanese War.First, this chapter analyses the motive to integrate them was to send-them for guerilla warfare in Taiwan secretly, which didn't come through, however. Then this chapter describes contributions of these Taiwanese in terms of data collecting,anti-war publicity and military actions. Also, this chapter will introduce in detail their demand to reestablish the provincial Taiwan government and participation in taking over Taiwan.By comparing their plan with corresponding policies of the KMT regime, this chapter will review some problems in taking over Taiwan. At last, this chapter will evaluate their activities in recovery of Taiwan in two sides. The third chapter introduces how Banshan worked at the beginning of the recovery of Taiwan.First, this chapter defines Banshan as Taiwanese who ever stayed at mainland China for a long time, worked for the KMT regime during anti-Japanese war and retumed Taiwan to take part in political activities after the war. This chapter also explains the division of Banshan group was owing to Chenyi's inclination, the KMT regime's bias over some of Banshan group and factional politics in the KMT party. Then, this chapter illustrates conditions of Banshan group after the 228 Incident and points out some of them, like Xie Dongmin,Lian Zhendong and Huang Chaoqin, still played an important political role in 1960s Taiwan while most of them had retired from political life This outgoing group finally fell from power in 1970s.From then on,Banshan was no longer an active group but a historical narrative. At last.this chapter describes the political personality and intragroup differences of Banshan and discusses their role both in positive and in negative sides.
