In the 1950 s,the situation of the cold war in East Asia became increasingly serious. The Korean War,two crises across the Taiwan straits and other events complicated the US-Taiwan relations in this period. When the United States resumed its aid to Taiwan,it acquired the privileges in Taiwan. The unequal relationship between the two sides bred a series of contradictions. The May 24,1957,incident in Taiwan is typical of the long backlog of contradictions between the two sides. This paper will start from the incident, analyze the reaction of the US and Taiwan in the incident, and discuss the impact of this incident on the US-Taiwan relations. This article is mainly divided into three chapters to discuss this event in detail. The first chapter mainly describes the origin and process of the incident on May 24,1957.The Korean War broke out on June 25,1950.June 27,the 7th fleet of the United States entered the Taiwan strait, militarily neutral to Taiwan, and concocting an uncertain status for Taiwan. On May 1,1951,the U.S.military advisory board formally came to Taiwan, bringing a series of economic, military, scientific and technological assistance to Taiwan. But given the lessons of the Kuomintang's defeat in China, the United States kept a grip on the use of aid to Taiwan,a practice that angered Chiang Kai-shek.In addition, the US military in Taiwan is not under the jurisdiction of the Taiwan authorities and often oppresses the Taiwan people, which has accumulated resentment in the hearts of the people for a long time.On March 20,1957,Liu Ziran was killed and failed to get a fair trial, which further aroused the public's anger and eventually led to the May 24 incident. The second chapter mainly discusses the reaction of the United States and Taiwan after the incident. The May 24 incident in 1957 was the first large-scale anti-American incident in Taiwan. After the incident,Taiwan worried that the incident would affect the US assistance to Taiwan. On the one hand, the incident was investigated and dealt with promptly; On the other hand,we want to clarify the situation and apologize to the US.After the United States understood the incident, domestic public opinion was in an uproar, and two voices emerged: withdrawal from Taiwan and continued assistance to Taiwan. The US government conducted detailed discussions on this and finally decided not to change its policy toward Taiwan. The third chapter mainly describes the far-reaching impact brought by this incident. The "May 24" incident in 1957 exposed the lack of emergency response capabilities of the Taiwan authorities and the slackness of the incumbent staff's thinking, which made Chiang Kai-shek very worried. Therefore,Chiang Kai-shek spurred the Taiwan authorities through the collective review of various departments. In addition, the most important impact of the incident on the US and Taiwan has re-negotiated on the status of the US military in Taiwan. After 7 years of negotiations, the "Agreement on the Status of US Military in Taiwan" was signed in 1965,which clearly stipulated related issues such as the status of the US military stationed in Taiwan. From this perspective, the behavior of the US military in Taiwan has been regulated to a certain extent, and the personal safety of the Taiwanese people has been protected.Through the discussion of the full text, some points can be drawn: First, the Liu Ziran event has a certain causal relationship with the "May 24" event, but the Liu Ziran event cannot be simply equated to the "May 24" event.Because the "May 24" incident is the result of a combination of various reasons.Second, the root of the "May 24" incident was extraterritoriality, but the Taiwan authorities played a role in promoting the incident. From the changes reported by Taiwan newspapers,it can be seen that the Taiwan authorities have let the people to a certain extent.Emotional development.Thirdly,in addition to the eventual conclusion of the "US military status in Taiwan" event,Chiang Kai-shek also spurred the Taiwan authorities through this incident and unified the scattered thoughts within the authorities.
