Ottoman Turks carried out systematic genocide against Armenians at home and what the poor Armenians suffered was expulsion, expropriation, kidnapping, torture, massacre and hunger from 1915 to 1917.The majority of the involved Armenians were forcibly transported from their traditionally inhabited regions such as Armenia and Anatolia to the deserts in Syria, where most people died of hunger and thirst. What was worse,a large number of Armenians were massacred designedly throughout the Ottoman Turks Empire.Women and children were abducted and terribly abused, and the entire wealth of the Armenian people was also deprived and expropriated. The United States had established close ties with Armenians through sending missionaries to preach and other methods since the 19 th century, before the genocide occurred. After the Armenian massacre occurred, all sectors of the U.S.community carried out extensive disclosure of the incident and also assisted the Armenian people.Moreover,U.S.government also intervened the disaster and offered help to these poor people. After the end of the First World War,the United States actively participated in Armenian affairs and tried to directly intervene in the Armenian affairs through mandatory administration, but failed. As Armenia was dismembered by Turkey and the Soviet Union, the United States' concern with the Armenian issues greatly faded away.Armenian Americans have been influencing U.S.political circles through various means to make U.S.officials pay attention to the Armenian Genocide and Armenian issues. However,in the early days, their efforts did not pay much off,as Armenians had less influence on American politics.Fortunately,Armenians from all parts of the country jointly formed some lobby groups to do what their predecessors had failed, with immigrants from Armenia increasing. With their efforts, the Armenian issues once again became a focus of American politics. As a result, the United States Congress always includes the Armenian affairs on the agenda, and the U.S.president also forms the tradition of issuing a commemorative statement on theanniversary of Armenia every year.It can be concluded that Armenian issues often affect the U.S.relations with Turkey and Armenia, and has a profound influence on the international situation in the Middle East and the outer Caucasus.
